I might have missed ‘Kowboyz & Indians’ cos I was having a fag and then ‘Ancestors’ cos I was at the Off licence but thankfully there were so many highlights at this gig that it didnt really matter. Personal fave had to be GLK using his iPad as a drum machine. If you ever get a chance to see these two play together – Go! Photos Josh MG

Produce a tune in 55minutes and do it live? Jammer, Mumdance & Sampha did exactly that at The Creators Project. Stolen from Ordio Kid’s Tumblr.

Mount Kimbie have released the video for ‘Would Know’ by hotly tipped filmmaker, Tyrone Lebon. The track is taken off their critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ which is out now on Hotflush Recordings.
Having provided remixes for a host of artist’s including Kele, Teeth and Au Revoir Simone, Dam Mantle’s sound is an abstract and refreshingly intelligent take on bass, one that stinks of originality. Fresh off of a UK tour with Gold Panda and with a mutitude of interesting projects in the pipeline, we thought it’d be best to grab a quick interview and Mix from the Glasgow based producer sooner rather than later…
So lets start off with the name, Dam Mantle, how did that come about?
‘a barrier, typically of concrete, constructed to hold back water and raise its level, the resulting reservoir being used in the generation of electricity.’
‘a loose sleeveless cloak or shawl, an outer or enclosing layer of tissue.’
Note to self – Grab a dictionary before asking that question in an interview again. When listening to your stuff I hear influences from a wide range of genres in particular Experimental Hip Hop and Dubstep. How would you best describe your sound?
It escapes me, it describes itself as it grows. It fluctuates and changes its face.

What is your musical background and how has that affected the sound you create?
I play a lot of instruments, none very well. It’s always been that way and therefore the source of the sounds change continuously.
How do you usually approach producing a track?
Playing something in, destroying it, reconstructing it and building upon shards and filling in gaps, opening gaps, destroying space, creating space. It always reflects my mood, in that way it is personal.
Which artists are influencing you at the minute or just feeling?
Always Clouddead, Mr Dibiase, Shabazz Palaces, The Blessings, Machine Drum, Dirty Projectors, Caribou, feeling a couple of the New Books tracks.

Tell us about your live show…
I play with another guy Calum Cunneen, who plays samplers, synths and a monome. I loop vocals, play pads and synths. We jam out the tracks loosely and as spontaneously as our nerves allow.
Of recent Glasgow has churned out a lot of forward thinking producers such as Hudson Mohawke, Rustie and yourself, subsequently the scene is blowing. Is there anything London could learn from Glasgow?
Nah, people do their own thing. Tons of good shit comes out of London, maybe the weather’s worse up here so people spend more time coming up with something fresh. Prrrf, I dunno.
Where can people catch you over the summer? Any festivals?
Yeah, we’re doing a fair few gigs this summer, think were gonna take it easy when September comes, hide away and work on some new shit and finish my degree.
Off Festival should be pretty cool, a Polish Festival which we’re doing a couple of Chopin inspired tracks for. Czech republic next for Creepy Teepee, then Field Day, Yes Way and some others.

Any releases on the horizon?
Yeah, we’re putting out an EP in a month or so, just finalising artwork and things at the moment. These tracks that have been knocking about for a while, feels like by getting this out it’s the end of the first episode and the start of the next.
Finally tell us about the mix you’ve done for us?
It’s an amalgamation of what I was working on at the time; with some stuff I’ve been listening to thrown in. It speaks for itself.
